Remove hidden location data from photos before you share them

Photos can carry the exact place they were taken. Here is how to check and remove it.

Most phones save extra information inside every photo, called metadata or EXIF. It can include the date and time, the phone model, camera settings and, if location is turned on, the GPS coordinates of where the picture was taken.

Why it matters

Some apps remove this data when you post, but many places don't: email attachments, file-sharing links, marketplaces, forums and many websites keep the original file. A photo of something you're selling, taken at home, can reveal your address.

How to remove it

  1. Open Remove photo metadata.
  2. Add the photos you want to share. They stay on your device; nothing is uploaded.
  3. Download the cleaned copies and share those.

Stop it at the source

You can also turn off location for the camera in your phone's privacy settings. You'll lose the map of where photos were taken in your own gallery, so many people prefer to keep it on and clean photos only when sharing them.
